History of Frýdek Castle
The beginnings of the Frýdek Castle are closely connected with the existence of Frýdek town. The foundation of Frýdek dates back to 1327, when building of the castle of the Duke of Těšín, Kazimír, was started. The castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau with a south terrace and arcaded corridors by Bruntálští of Vrbno in 17th century. Another owner, George III. of Oppersdorf, built the castle chapel of Saint Barbara, new buildings under the castle and sightseeing tower - gloriet. His son Francis Eusebius repaired the castle after the great fire in 1688 and he also built a new chapel tower and rebuilt the Knight's Hall. Pražma of Bílkov rebuilt the mansion to its present form with a new representative staircase in 18th century. In 1797, the castle was bought by Habsburgs dynasty. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the roofs and towers were lowered. After 1918, the castle was the seat of State Forests Administration, so there were apartments and offices.
